50% of the rural poor of Honduras are chronically malnourished. It is a problem with a simple and relatively inexpensive solution: Help families grow food. We favor growing edible trees because they are permanent, only need to be planted once, and provide nutrition all year long, even during droughts, because of their deep roots. These trees provide nutrition for the family and also help feed the animals.
We have 6 to 10 full time students who live with us. They learn all the procedures and become teachers. We take them around Honduras teaching others. Hondurans teaching Hondurans makes it more sustainable.
In Honduras, The Organic Learning Center (TOLC) is CAO: Centro Aprendizaje Orgánico. CAO is the Spanish version of TOLC and is pronounced like “cow” in English. When you hear people talking about “cow”, they are probably not talking about an animal.
