50% of the rural poor of Honduras are chronically malnourished. It is a problem with a simple and relatively inexpensive solution: Help families grow food. We favor growing perennials because they are permanent, only need to be planted once, and provide nutrition all year long, even during droughts, because of their deep roots. Many of these are trees that provide nutrition for the family and also help feed the animals.
We typically have 8 to 10 full time students who live with us. They learn all the procedures and become teachers. Some of them will eventually begin satellite campuses of this campus. We plan to create a network of satellite campuses across Honduras. Those satellite campuses will be spread around Honduras teaching others. Hondurans teaching Hondurans makes it much more sustainable.
Like our original home campus, each new satellite campus will put unproductive land into production. There is much land around Honduras, like our original campus site, that has been abused through slash and burn and excessive use of chemicals, so that it becomes unproductive. We are salvaging and recovering that land thus creating a net gain in food production.
We are beginning to develop a library of videos we create sharing what we are learning with other charities working in Honduras. Some of those videos can be found Here.
WWOOF: World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms
For those interested in WWOOFing, here is some info.
.
This video shows some 10th graders visiting us. They are learning the connection between trees and the availability of clean water.
They also learn how to make an organic pesticide using vinegar and common leaves in Honduras.
